Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) is Assam's only health sciences university, established in 2009 under the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences Act, 2007, enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. Headquartered inside the Gauhati Medical College campus at Narakasur Hilltop, Bhangagarh, Guwahati, SSUHS is the UGC-recognised affiliating authority for medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, and paramedical colleges across the state — with jurisdiction spanning the whole of Assam. Around 90 courses are offered through roughly 47 affiliated institutions, ranging from MBBS and BDS to BSc Nursing, BPharm, BAMS, BHMS, and diploma-level paramedical programes, making it the central authority for professional health education and admissions in the state.

Admission to SSUHS-affiliated colleges follows an entrance-exam route depending on the course. For MBBS and BDS, candidates apply through NEET UG, with seats filled via 85% state-quota counselling conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education, Assam, and 15% All India Quota counselling by the Medical Counselling Committee. For BAMS, BHMS, BSc Nursing, BPharm, PharmD, and DPharm, candidates apply online for the university's own Common Entrance Examination (CEE/CET). GNM and ANM admissions go through the GNM/ANM Entrance Examinations conducted directly by SSUHS. After results, candidates register on the counselling portal, fill college and programme preferences, and are allotted seats round-by-round based on merit and category.

SSUHS oversees admissions across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral health programmes: MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSc Nursing, BPharm, PharmD, DPharm, BSc Medical Technology, BOPTM, GNM, ANM, and PhD across specialisations. Each stream has its own qualifying exam — NEET UG for MBBS/BDS, NEET PG for MD/MS, NEET SS for super-speciality courses, the university's CEE/CET for BAMS, BHMS, BSc Nursing, BPharm and allied programmes, and GNM/ANM Entrance Examinations for nursing diploma courses. Financial assistance for eligible students is generally routed through Government of Assam welfare scholarships and central schemes on the National Scholarship Portal rather than a university-specific fund — candidates should check both SSUHS notices and the state/national scholarship portals for applicable schemes.

Eligibility varies by programme. MBBS, BDS, BAMS, and BHMS require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, plus a qualifying NEET UG score. BSc Nursing and CEE-route programmes typically require at least 50% aggregate marks in PCB at Class 12 (45% for PwD, 40% for reserved categories), a minimum age of 17 as on 31 December of the admission year, and Indian citizenship; some government nursing seats in Assam are reserved for female candidates only, and a domicile/permanent residence certificate is required for state-quota government seats. GNM and ANM eligibility follows similar Class 12 science-stream requirements. PG and super-speciality admissions require the relevant UG degree plus a qualifying NEET PG/SS score.

Selection for MBBS and BDS follows NEET UG merit, with 85% of seats filled through Assam's state-quota counselling (Directorate of Medical Education) and 15% through All India Quota counselling. For BAMS, BHMS, BSc Nursing, BPharm, and allied courses, SSUHS releases its own merit list based on CEE/CET scores, followed by round-wise online counselling where candidates fill college and programme choices. GNM and ANM candidates are selected via GNMEE/ANMEE merit lists and separate counselling rounds. Across streams, candidates must complete document verification and pay the requisite fee at the time of seat confirmation, then report to the allotted college within the deadline to complete admission formalities.

Tuition and hostel fees at SSUHS-affiliated colleges vary by course, institution (government vs. private), and reservation category, and are set by the individual colleges rather than a single university-wide fee schedule — candidates should check the specific college's fee structure during counselling. Graduates go on to practise as doctors (MBBS/MD/MS), dentists (BDS), AYUSH practitioners (BAMS/BHMS), nurses (BSc Nursing/GNM/ANM), pharmacists (BPharm/PharmD), and allied health professionals across Assam's government hospitals, primary health centres, and private healthcare sector. Many pursue further specialisation through NEET PG, NEET SS, or postgraduate nursing and pharmacy programmes, given the state's ongoing demand for trained healthcare personnel in urban and rural postings.
