About ITBP
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. It was raised in 1962 and is primarily responsible for guarding the high-altitude India-China border, stretching from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. Its personnel operate in some of the harshest terrain and weather conditions in the world, often at altitudes above 9,000 feet. Besides border security, ITBP is known for anti-Naxal operations, internal security duties, VIP security, mountaineering and rescue work, and disaster relief during floods, earthquakes and landslides. Because of this wide role, ITBP offers a prestigious and stable career for candidates from across India, including the Northeast.
Recruitment Process
ITBP recruits through several routes depending on the post. Group C posts such as Constable (Tradesman), Head Constable and Sub-Inspector are usually filled through direct recruitment by ITBP itself, with notifications published on the official recruitment portal and employment news. Constable (General Duty) vacancies are generally filled through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) GD Constable examination, while Assistant Commandant (Group A) officers are selected through the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) Examination. Candidates must apply online within the notified dates, upload a recent photograph, signature and required documents, and pay the application fee where applicable (SC/ST candidates and women are generally exempt). Always read the official notification carefully, as vacancy counts, dates and rules change with every recruitment cycle.
Popular ITBP Exams
Popular ITBP recruitment drives include ITBP Constable (Tradesman) such as Driver, Carpenter, Cook, Tailor, Barber and Safaiwala; ITBP Head Constable (Telecommunication and Education & Stress Counsellor); ITBP Sub-Inspector (Staff Nurse, Telecommunication, Overseer and Pharmacist related posts); ITBP Constable (Animal Transport); and ITBP Assistant Commandant (Telecom, Veterinary and Medical Officers). Candidates also reach ITBP through the SSC GD Constable examination and the UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant examination. Medical specialists and Group A technical officers are recruited through separate notifications from time to time.
Eligibility Overview
Eligibility depends on the post. Constable (Tradesman) posts usually require Matriculation (Class 10) pass along with a relevant trade skill or ITI qualification, with a typical age limit of 18 to 23 years. Head Constable and Sub-Inspector posts generally require Class 12 or a graduation or diploma in the relevant field, with higher age limits, typically up to 25 to 28 years depending on the post. Assistant Commandant requires a bachelor's degree from a recognised university and an age of about 20 to 25 years. Candidates must be Indian citizens and meet the prescribed physical standards for height, chest and weight, with relaxations for SC, ST, OBC, ex-servicemen and certain tribal and hill regions as per Government of India rules. Always confirm exact qualification, age and physical criteria in the latest official notification.
Selection Process
The selection process for most ITBP Group B and C posts has several stages: Physical Standard Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Written Examination (for most posts), Trade or Skill Test where applicable, Document Verification, and Detailed Medical Examination (DME), followed by a Review Medical Examination if needed. The PET usually includes a race (such as 1.6 km for male candidates), a long jump and a high jump, with separate standards for women. The written exam is typically objective type with negative marking, covering General Knowledge, Mathematics, Reasoning and English or Hindi. Assistant Commandant selection through UPSC includes a written exam, physical standards and efficiency tests, and an interview or personality test. A merit list is prepared on the basis of the final marks, subject to medical fitness and document verification.

ITBP posts are paid under the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix. Constable posts are generally in Pay Level 3 (Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100), Head Constable in Pay Level 4 (Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100), Sub-Inspector in Pay Level 6 (Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400), and Assistant Commandant in Pay Level 10 (Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500).
