National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a Mission Mode Project under the Digital India initiative, providing a single online platform through which students across India can apply for scholarships offered by various central ministries, departments, and state governments. NSP handles the entire scholarship lifecycle — application, verification, processing, and direct disbursal of funds into students' bank accounts — aiming for a simplified, accountable, and transparent system. The portal serves students from Class 1 through PhD level, covering pre-matric, post-matric, merit-based, and need-based scholarship schemes run by bodies such as the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Students apply for NSP scholarships by completing a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the official portal, scholarships.gov.in, followed by selecting and filling the relevant scheme-specific application form. Applications require basic personal, academic, income, and bank account details, along with supporting documents. Once submitted, applications go through institute-level verification before final processing by NSP. Registration for the 2026-27 academic year opened on 1st June 2026, with scheme-wise deadlines running through the year — pre-matric schemes generally close earlier than post-matric schemes, so students should check their specific scheme's deadline rather than assume one common date.

NSP hosts numerous scholarship schemes, broadly divided into Pre-Matric (Classes 1–10) and Post-Matric (Class 11 onward, including Polytechnic, Diploma, Graduation, Post-Graduation, and professional courses) categories. Popular schemes include Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/Minority students, the AICTE Pragati and Saksham Schemes for technical education, the National Fellowship for Higher Education of ST Students, and Top Class and Merit-cum-Means scholarships. Many state governments also route their own scholarship schemes through NSP, so students should check both central and their respective state's listed schemes.

Eligibility depends entirely on the specific scholarship scheme, but generally requires the applicant to be a citizen of India, currently enrolled in a recognised school, college, or institute, and to meet the scheme's category (SC/ST/OBC/Minority/General-EWS) and family income criteria. Pre-matric schemes typically cover students up to Class 10, while post-matric schemes cover Class 11 onward, including higher education and professional courses. Most central schemes have an annual family income cap, commonly around ₹2.5 lakh, though this varies by scheme. Students should always check the exact eligibility criteria listed under their chosen scheme on the NSP portal.

After a student submits their application on NSP, it first goes through verification at the institute level, where the school or college confirms enrollment and academic details. The application then moves to the relevant state or district nodal department for further verification, and finally to the scheme-sponsoring ministry for approval. Once approved, the scholarship amount is directly credited to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Students should keep their application status updated and respond promptly if their form is marked "Defective," as corrections have a limited window.

There is no application fee for NSP scholarship schemes. Scholarship amounts vary significantly by scheme, covering components such as tuition fees, maintenance allowance, and other academic expenses — ranging from a few thousand rupees for pre-matric schemes to substantially higher amounts for post-matric, technical, and higher-education schemes. Funds are paid directly into the student's bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer, reducing delays and leakage. Beyond financial support, schemes like AICTE Pragati/Saksham are specifically designed to support underrepresented groups in technical education, easing the path toward continued studies and future careers.
