About NTA
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is India's premier autonomous testing organisation for entrance and eligibility examinations to higher education. It was approved by the Union Cabinet in November 2017 and began conducting exams in 2018 under the Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education), Government of India, as an independent and self-sustained body registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. NTA designs, conducts and scores tests for admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes and for fellowships. Counselling and seat allotment are handled by separate bodies such as MCC, JoSAA, universities and state authorities.
NTA's flagship exams are JEE Main, NEET UG, CUET UG, CUET PG, UGC NET and CSIR UGC NET. It also conducts NCET, NCHM JEE, CMAT, the NIFT entrance exam, AIAPGET, ICAR AIEEA, the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination, RIMC and Rashtriya Military Schools entrance tests, among others. In a Rajya Sabha reply dated 22 July 2026, the Ministry of Education stated that NTA has conducted over 270 examinations since 2018 covering more than 6.6 crore candidate registrations, including 12 examinations and over 65 lakh registrations in 2026 up to that date.
2026 has also been a year of major reform. NEET (UG) 2026, held on 3 May 2026, was cancelled after paper-leak allegations; a re-examination was conducted on 21 June 2026 and the result was declared on 16 July 2026. The Centre has since been restructuring NTA, a high-powered task force led by Nandan Nilekani is reviewing further reforms, and the government has announced a move to computer-based NEET UG from 2027 (the Centre has told the Supreme Court that the final decision is under active consideration). Always rely on the official NTA website, nta.ac.in, for confirmed schedules and notices.
Admission & Application Process
Applying for any NTA exam follows a similar online process, but dates, fees, eligibility and document rules differ for each exam, so always read the official Information Bulletin first.
1. Read the notification: Open nta.ac.in or the exam's own portal (for example jeemain.nta.nic.in, neet.nta.nic.in or cuet.nta.nic.in) and download the Information Bulletin.
2. Register: Create a new registration with your name, parent details, mobile number and email ID. NTA advises using only your own or your parent/guardian's mobile number and email.
3. Fill the application form: Enter personal and academic details, choose your exam city preferences and select papers or subjects as applicable.
4. Upload documents: Upload your recent photograph, signature and any certificates required (category, EWS or PwBD) in the size and format given in the bulletin.
5. Pay the fee online: Pay through net banking, debit/credit card or UPI. The fee depends on the exam and your category.
6. Download the confirmation page: Keep a copy for future reference.
7. Use the correction window: NTA usually opens a short correction window after the last date, with limited editable fields.
8. City intimation slip and admit card: Download both from the exam portal using your application number and password or date of birth.
9. Appear for the exam, check the provisional answer key and recorded responses, raise challenges within the window (a per-question fee applies), then download your result or scorecard after the final answer key.
10. Admission: Take part in the counselling or admission process run by the relevant authority, because NTA does not allot seats.
Tip: Keep your scanned photo, signature, ID proof and certificates ready in your Avedan document locker so you can complete the form quickly.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Eligibility is set separately for each exam in its Information Bulletin, so always confirm there before applying. Typical requirements are:
- JEE Main: Class 12 (or equivalent) passed or appearing within the qualifying years stated in the bulletin. NTA sets no age limit, but participating institutes and JoSAA have their own admission criteria.
- NEET UG: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English, and a minimum age of 17 years at the time of admission. There is no upper age limit.
- CUET UG: Class 12 passed or appearing. NTA does not fix an age limit, but each university sets its own programme-wise eligibility.
- CUET PG: A bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognised institution; final-year students may be eligible as per the bulletin. NTA does not set an age limit.
- UGC NET: A master's degree (or equivalent) with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories); final-year students and four-year undergraduate degree holders may be eligible as per UGC rules. The JRF age limit is typically 30 years with relaxations, and there is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission.
- CSIR UGC NET: Master's, BS-MS, B.E./B.Tech or equivalent in the eligible science subjects with the minimum marks stated in the bulletin; the JRF age limit is typically 28 years with relaxations.
Reserved-category candidates (SC, ST, OBC-NCL as per the Central List, EWS) and PwBD candidates must submit valid certificates in the prescribed format. Eligibility to take an exam is different from eligibility for admission: colleges and counselling authorities set their own cut-offs, domicile rules and qualifying marks.
Selection, Merit & Counselling
NTA conducts the test and declares results; it does not run counselling or allot seats, admissions or jobs.
- Exam mode: Most NTA exams, including JEE Main, CUET, UGC NET, CSIR UGC NET and CMAT, are computer-based tests. NEET UG has been pen-and-paper (OMR) so far, with a computer-based format planned from 2027.
- Scoring: Exams held in multiple shifts use normalisation, and results are given as NTA scores or percentiles (for example JEE Main and CUET). NEET UG is scored out of 720 marks and ranked on an All India Rank basis.
- Answer keys: NTA releases the provisional answer key and recorded responses, accepts challenges for a limited window, and then publishes the final answer key. Results are based on the final key, and re-evaluation or rechecking is generally not allowed once it is published.
- UGC NET results: Candidates are placed in one of three categories: JRF with Assistant Professor and PhD eligibility, Assistant Professor and PhD eligibility, or PhD admission only. Roughly the top 6% of appeared candidates in each subject and category qualify.
- Counselling and merit lists: NEET UG seats are allotted through MCC (All India Quota, central and deemed universities) and state counselling authorities. JEE Main admissions to NITs, IIITs and other institutes run through JoSAA, while IIT admissions need JEE Advanced. CUET UG and CUET PG merit lists, cut-offs and admissions are handled by each participating university.
Always follow the counselling authority's official schedule after the NTA result is declared.
Fees, Placements & Career Paths
Fees: NTA charges an examination fee for each exam. The amount depends on the exam, your category (General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwBD, third gender), the number of papers or subjects chosen, and whether you select an exam city in India or abroad. Fees are paid online and are generally non-refundable. Confirm the exact amount in the Information Bulletin and pay only on the official portal.
Placements: NTA is a testing agency and does not run courses, so there are no placements. The exams it conducts open these career paths:
- NEET UG: doctors, dentists, AYUSH practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals.
- JEE Main: engineering, architecture and planning careers through NITs, IIITs and other institutes, with JEE Advanced as the route to IITs.
- CUET UG and CUET PG: degrees in central and participating universities leading to careers in teaching, research, public service and industry.
- UGC NET and CSIR UGC NET: Assistant Professor posts in colleges and universities, and JRF research fellowships leading to a PhD.
- CMAT and NIFT entrance: management and design careers.
- Sainik Schools, RIMC and Rashtriya Military Schools: schooling that prepares students for the armed forces.
NTA as an employer: As per the Ministry of Education (July 2026), NTA has 39 permanent posts filled through deputation and engages consultants, young professionals and other staff on contract or outsourced basis. Watch nta.ac.in for official vacancy notices.
