Description

The Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme is an initiative of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for students from the North Eastern Region (NER) to encourage higher education. A total of 10,000 fresh scholarships are offered every year to eligible students pursuing undergraduate courses. Eligible NER students admitted to the first year of a regular, full-time UG programme can apply on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) from 16 September 2026 until 30 November 2026, after the last date was officially extended from 31 October 2026. The scholarship provides ₹80,000 per year (₹8,000 per month for 10 months), subject to UGC guidelines. One Time Registration (OTR) on NSP is mandatory before applying. Passed Class XII from a school in the North Eastern Region (NER) and admitted to the first year of a regular, full-time undergraduate (UG) degree programme. Parental/family income must not exceed ₹4.5 lakh per annum. The scholarship is awarded for the normal duration of the UG course (typically 3–5 years as per UGC). For integrated or dual-degree programmes, the scholarship applies only to the UG component. Not eligible: Open University students; students already availing another undergraduate scholarship; admissions through management quota; non-degree diploma courses; standalone diploma or certificate courses; candidates who have already acquired a degree.

How to apply: Complete mandatory One Time Registration (OTR) on scholarships.gov.in, then apply for Ishan Uday under the UGC schemes. OTR now uses Aadhaar face authentication through the NSP OTR mobile app—ensure Aadhaar-linked biometrics are enabled. If you encounter error 904 during face authentication, update the AadhaarFaceRD app and retry.

The student application last date has been officially extended from 31 October 2026 to 30 November 2026. Verification deadlines (2026 session): Defective-application correction and institute verification—15 December 2026; DNO/SNO/MNO verification—31 December 2026.

Only first-year UG students with NER domicile are eligible; the college/institute must be registered on NSP. Change of course or institution forfeits the scholarship.

Eligible states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland.

Selection Process

Merit-based on Class XII marks among eligible applicants; there is no fixed minimum percentage in the published scheme guidelines—higher marks improve ranking within the state quota. No separate entrance exam. 10,000 fresh scholarships per year are distributed among NER states in proportion to state population; unfilled state quotas may roll over to other NER states. As per UGC Ishan Uday scheme guidelines (2021), slots are earmarked approximately 50% for arts, humanities, social sciences, law, and management, and 50% for science, engineering, and technology—confirm stream-wise allocation in the official guideline PDF for the current session.
